Our text for this week is Romans 10:9-10. It says, "If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved."
This is one of several texts in Paul's epistles where he sums up the gospel message in a simple, short sentence or two. Every now and then, in Paul's writings, he'll make a concise summary statement about the way of salvation, summing up the heart of the gospel in a simple, condensed statement. And these are all vital biblical references. Ephesians 2:8-9 is one of them: "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast." Titus 3:5 is another: "he saved us [Christ did], not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit." Romans 4:4-5 is another: "Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness." Galatians 2:16 is another: "We know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ."...
