There can be no doubt in our minds that humility is a vital characteristic in God's Kingdom since it is a clear characteristic of God Himself. Augustine said, 'If you ask me what is the first precept of the Christian religion, I will answer that the first, second and third, is humility'. True humility and being truly effective in the Kingdom cannot be separated. Humility ought to be the very essence of who we are and though it is manifested by actions, we must not think that humility is merely a way of acting-an external posture. We see how vitally important humility is and how central it is to the outworking of God's Kingdom work, yet we also see how unnatural humility is to us this side of glory and that we are skilled at perfecting the appearance while ignoring the reality. The more godly we become, the more acutely aware of our failing we will be and the more acutely aware of our failing we become, the more whole-heartedly we ought to cast yourself upon God's mercy. The clearer we see our own inadequacies, the more desperately and sincerely we will cry out to the Lord and trust in His mercy alone. It is not hard to see why truly effective Kingdom work is accomplished through those who have broken and contrite hearts.
