"Propitiation" is not a word that we commonly use in our present day English vernacular. Yet, it is an important word because it accurately conveys the meaning of what Christ did on the cross. "Propitiation" entails more than just Christ substituting Himself on the cross for us and taking upon Himself that which should have been our punishment. To "propitiate" also means to make favorably inclined; to appease; to conciliate. The wages of sin is death. Before God could legally justify us, that is, declare us righteous, payment for our sin had to be made. In order for we as sinners to pay for our sins, we would have to suffer for all eternity in a lake of fire never being able to make payment in full because we could never stop being sinners which makes us incapable of satisfying the just demands of God's law. But Jesus, being sinless, did satisfy the just demands of God's law. And because He did, He could lay down His life for us and His sacrifice is acceptable to the Father. Now that the wrath of a just and holy God against sin has been appeased by His Son...now anyone who puts their whole heart's faith and trust in Jesus Christ is viewed favorably by the Father and is freely granted eternal life. You and I could never be the propitiation for our sins. Jesus Christ is the only propitiation for our sins.
