"For the Word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." Hebrews 4:12
The emphasis of the longest psalm in the Bible is on the vital ministry the Word of God has in the spiritual life of God's children. Its 176 verses describe how the Word is the means of our growth in holiness. It provides instruction on how to handle the challenges and pressures that always accompany the Christian's life in this world.
The first three verses of Psalm 119 are beatitudes proclaiming the basis for a happy life by seeking the Lord with a whole heart. The rest of the psalm describes how God reveals Himself to us through His Word. The psalm is a acrostic. It is divided into 22 sections of 8 verses each. The first word of each verse of each section begins with the corresponding letter of the Hebrew alphabet. (The first 8 verses begin with "aleph" the next 8 begin with "beth" and so on).
