What 1 Corinthians 10-11 tells us about the Lord's Supper (we enjoy it weekly)
Introduction The Lord's Supper as a cause of division, contention, and fear.
Walter Marshall, in his classic book, The Gospel Mystery of Sanctification, describes this situation during the Puritan period in England in the 17th century. He says, “Many account it the safest way wholly to abstain from such a dangerous ordinance, or at least, that once a year is enough to run so great a hazard…. Instead of striving to receive Christ and His salvation therein, they account themselves to have succeeded well if they come off without the sentence of damnation” [199].
1. The Lord's Supper is a means of blessing and of communion with Christ. a. You remember Christ's sacrifice for you (11:24). b. You proclaim the Lord's death till he comes (11:26). c. You show love to the one true body of Christ (10:17, 11:33). d. We are communing with the body and blood of Christ (10:16).
“If anybody should ask me how this communion takes place, I am not ashamed to confess that it is a secret too lofty for either my mind to comprehend or my words to declare. And to speak more plainly, I rather experience than understand it” (Calvin, Institutes iv.17.32).
2. Selfish division makes for unworthy eating. a. Schisms (11:18) b. Selfishness (11:21-22)
3. Paul's remedy: Love Your Neighbor
Conclusion What Christ gives, we need to receive.
