This chapter records another blot on David's life when he failed to trust the Lord and chose to take a census of his army. His decision to number his men resulted in the deaths of some 70,000 Israelites. As the chapter begins we are made aware of the fact that leading up to this time, something unrecorded had gone on among the nation that caused 'the Lord's anger burned against Israel' and their chastening would come as a consequence of David's decision to carry out the census.
Putting together the parallel accounts from 2 Samuel and 1 Chronicles unfolds the details that give us a glimpse of the unseen spirit activity that was going on.
Upon conviction of his offense against the Lord, he repents of his sin, taking full responsibility for his decision. We can take great encouragement by the mercy of God shown even in the midst of His judgment.
This chapter is also highly significant as David purchases 'at full price' the land on which he will build an altar and the future temple of the Lord, in Jerusalem will be built by his son, Solomon as recorded in 2 Chronicles 3:1! How significant Mount Moriah would become was foreshadowed as the place where Abraham demonstrated his willingness to sacrifice his son, Isaac, to God (Genesis 22:1-19.)
