Although we engage our physical faculties to eat & drink of the Table, true partaking of the Table is an exercise of faith, an exercise of the soul. How is it that we can have fellowship with the body & blood of Jesus (1 Cor 10:16) when He is bodily enthroned in glory & seated as Lamb of God upon God's throne? We are enabled to feed on Him by faith due to the ministry of the Holy Spirit who bridges the distance of time: causing us to remember - not merely the recollection of a past departed Savior, but as having present participation in the now accomplished salvation & the person of that Savior. The Holy Spirit also bridges the distance of space so as truly to unite us to Jesus who is now exalted upon His throne. Faith made vital & living by the Spirit who joins us to Jesus Himself is how we partake of the Supper & actually feed upon Christ to the nourishment of our souls.
