The great overriding mission of the church of Christ, and of every true Christian, is the proclamation of the good news of redemption through Christ's finished work and sacrificial death. But that message is undermined if we come to believe that there other ways to God are equally valid. The George Barna research group asked a sampling of Americans if they agreed with the following statement: "Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists and others all pray to the same God, even though they use different names for God." Half of those who gave evidence of being born-again Christians, and half of those who attend evangelical churches, agreed with the statement. It appears that many Americans, including many "evangelicals," have adopted the philosophy that all religions are valid roads to God. But when Christians begin to doubt the exclusiveness of Christ, they have become infected with an infernal virus that will destroy their concern for their neighbor's soul, undermine their church's missionary endeavors, and generally devalue the gospel on a worldwide scale.
