Johann von Staupitz was Martin Luther's "father confessor". In Staupitz, Luther had been connected to a father figure who was much more open to listening and dispensing compassion than his own earthly father. Staupitz played a key role in helping sow the seeds of the Gospel into Luther's heart as a young man. He urged Luther to look to Christ, because it is in Jesus that we see the Father's loving heart.
