Paul's flow of thought in the book of Romans can be summarized in five words: condemnation, justification, sanctification, unification, and application. With the beginning of Romans 9 and continuing through chapter 11 Paul deals with the theme of "unification". It is obvious that in the New Testament church the vast majority of professing Christians are Gentiles and not ethnic Jews. Has God cast off His people of the Old Testament? What plan, if any, does He have for them? And what is our relationship as believing Gentiles to the Israel of God? Paul begins this section by affirming in the most remarkable terms his deep love for his fellow countrymen in his desire that they should be saved, and he enumerates many of the external privileges of the Jews as well.
