Starting in 1633, the tradition of the "Election Sermon" continued for over 200 years in America. At the heart of this practice was the view that God's Law-Word applies to all of life, including (perhaps especially) civil government. In one such sermon, preached in 1788, Dr. Samuel Langdon said, "Let not men openly irreligious and immoral become your legislators; for how can you expect good laws to be made by men who have no fear of God before their eyes, and who boldly trample on the authority of His commands?" In our day evangelicalism has failed to follow Langdon's advice. We have abandoned the biblical principles for voting. This Election Sermon focuses on the biblical guidelines for voting and the problems with substituting said guidelines with political pragmatism or prognostication.
