Pride is a great temptation. Even if we are experienced Christians and know how to use our spiritual armour we may be tempted to rely on ourselves instead of on the Lord. Prayer is essential for Christian warfare. But it extends beyond that, to our entire Christian life. That is why we are told to 'pray always'. It may be thanksgiving, lament or intercession. It may be public or private, planned or spontaneous - every type of prayer is included. Many Christians carry a sense of guilt and failure because their prayer life is so weak. So Paul reminds us of the help available - 'praying in the Spirit'. The Holy Spirit gives holy longings and the ability to express them. He can lead our thoughts so we pray as we would not otherwise have done. He helps us to plan, but he also gives liberty in expression. We should pray for ourselves - obviously - but the emphasis of the text is on prayer for others. It should not only be for conversions but for 'all saints'. We are all members of one body; Christ has an interest in each one of us, so to pray for one another is both natural and part of our love for Him. Even Paul, when he asks for prayer, mentions the work of the gospel rather than his own interests. And if he needed prayer - so do we.
