We see that Paul's rejoicing was not because his circumstances had become easier due to the gift from the Philippians, but because Christ was glorified through their genuine care and self-sacrifice--his rejoicing was because Jesus was being glorified. Paul then explains how vital contentment is for Christian maturity and goes into quite some detail in order to show us what contentment looks like in the dusty details of our day to day living. There can be no escaping from the massive demands that God has placed upon us and Paul explains how he could cope with these demands and even excel in manifesting the virtues God calls His children to possess. These verses reveal vital truths about what sanctification looks like and how it is achieved.
