Right away, we are confronted by the very shortness of this letter. When John writes such a short letter, a single page in length, we should expect that he will focus on key issues. He doesn't have time to get into what it means that the angels of the little ones always see the Father's face. He isn't going to get into the decrees of God or the other "strong meat" topics. So because this book is so short, I'm persuaded that the topics it covers are of exceptional importance in the Christian life. We've been on Exodus for around a hundred Sundays now (indeed, we started it a month before finishing 1 John). Exodus has some absolutely foundational material. But it is also forty chapters long. It covers a lot. Second John covers a little. This letter is one chapter, one page, indeed, one paragraph. So the things it majors on are things we need to major on. What we'll see is that John majors on two things we need to do — love and guard — and two things we need to have — truth and joy.
