False teachers had entered the Galatian churches with a false message—salvation was Jesus plus circumcision or works of the law. This has been an age old problem since the beginning of time. Satan has been active in counterfeiting the true Gospel. Cain wanted to develop his own system though God had revealed the plan of salvation to Adam and Eve. The people in Noah’s day no doubt had a belief system rooted in the best philosophies of man. However, it didn’t work out so well for them. Salvation is by grace through faith, and it is apart from human reasoning and human works. With the Apostle Paul’s authority and message under attack, he writes Galatians explaining God’s plan of salvation. God’s plan was devised before the foundation of the world, and the work of redemption was accomplished through the finished work of Christ on the cross. Paul’s message was centered in the cross. He preached Christ and Him crucified. The Apostle had met the Risen Christ on the road to Damascus and his life was transformed, and he was commissioned by Jesus to take the message to the nations. Paul desired to win his erring brothers and sisters back to Christ and the cross. His pastor’s heart shines through with intensity as he protects the flock from a false gospel. Now, we turn to Paul’s closing remarks in the letter. He takes this opportunity to remind his readers of the central theme of his ministry—the cross of Christ. The Apostle boasts in the cross instead of circumcision, and he desires that his brothers and sisters in the Lord to live “The Crucified Life.”
