David's kind treatment of the poor, lame, helpless Mephibosheth is a blessed portrait of the Lord Jesus' handling of poor sinners who come to Him.
Mephibosheth feared David's power when he was fetched from obscurity at David's command, but the King's command, "Fear Not," banished all his fear!
So too, sinners are fetched to Christ by the Father in fear and trembling, for by the Holy Ghost we are made to know our guiltiness. Though having all power to judge and destroy, our Lord Jesus came to us in meekness and lowliness of heart, and so many times commanded His people to "Fear Not!" Then we know that all that power has swung round from being against us to being inclined on our behalf - only because God has determined by His sovereign grace to save us and bless us.
Jesus urged his disciples, caught in overwhelming waves of trouble, to fear not - and He demonstrated His power over the sea which would engulf them.
The Lord urged Jairus to fear not, only believe, and his dead daughter would be made whole. In death, we are all lame and helpless, but the One who has got the keys of death and hell says to His people, fear not!
When he saw Jesus' mighty power, Peter cried out "depart from me for I am a sinful man." Yet Jesus commanded him to fear not. Christ will use His loved ones for service though we in ourselves are unworthy of His presence.
At the Transfiguration and in the Revelation, the Saints trembled in the presence of the blazing glory of the Redeemer, but Christ commanded "Fear Not!"
The basis for our boldness before our God is the Lamb's blood which cleanses us from all unrighteousness.
Indeed, His perfect love has cast out all our fear.
