This passage gives us some good insight into the hearts of those who were confronted by the revelation of Christ in this miracle and their responses are instructive as to how our own hearts respond to God's revelation to us. What Christ did in that miracle is no clearer revelation than what we have preserved for us as Scripture. Christ's truth is radically opposed to all that man highly exalts and esteems to be good and true. Thus, unless we humble ourselves before His definition of truth, we too will seek to escape from His light by seeking to destroy the light. There can never be a neutral response to God's light ad truth. Our hearts either conform to true truth or harden against it by calling light darkness and darkness light--something we clearly see happening in this passage.
