Amasai is another Spirit filled man in the Bible. He is to be viewed here as a representative man, for he speaks on the behalf of a number of others. He is not only speaking for himself, although that would still be of significance to us.
However, there are many others who are of the same mind and spirit as this man Amasai. He is the representative spokesperson of a number of men from the tribes of Benjamin and Judah, 1 Chron 12:16.
Collectively they are of one mind and one speech. Amasai is in good company.
It must also be noticed that he didn't speak for everyone in Israel at that time.
These are the days of David's rejection. While the anointed king, he is not the acknowledged king. David is in the hold, v16, 8. He living in a cave. He is not accepted or welcomed in Jerusalem. Another, namely Saul, is on the throne and he doesn't want David anywhere about him.
Yet in these times we find men of the caliber of Amasai coming to David and uttering the words of our text: Thine are we David and on thy side thou son of Jesse…
We are told that the words which Amasai speaks, on his own and on the behalf of others, are prompted by the spirit. This must be none other than the Spirit of the Lord. It is He who has clothed Amasai [see marginal reading] and causes him to utter the words that he does. Amasai is speaking as a Spirit filled man.
Amasai is an type each Spirit filled individual and their allegiance to a greater king than David, namely Jesus Christ. |
