What sin is, how sin is to be dealt with, and the devastating consequences of sin are issues about which there is great confusion. An unwillingness to recognize the seriousness of sin and the lack of control we have over the extent of the consequences results in great tragedy in many lives.
David had demonstrated great godliness and faitfulness as the 'man after God's own heart,' and yet for a few moments of pleasure, yielded to the lust in his flesh and brought disasterous consequences on the rest of his life and the life of his family.
From these Psalms we can learn what the response should be when confronted sin. We learn how carrying the guilt and burden sin causes mental, emotional and physical torment. We learn how sin must be dealt with for cleansing and forgiveness. We learn how undeserving we are as sinners before God and how His grace and mercy are the basis for His offer relief. We learn how sin must be confessed and our guilt assumed.
As we truly learn these truths and take them to heart, like David, we too can know the full fellowship with God He would have our relationship with HIm enjoy.
We must also be on guard against the disasters and futility that results from applying worldly remedies and solutions to our errant behavior.
Sadly, many, being deceived in their self-centered, post-modern thinking, refuse to acknowledge God's standards as the absolute right and wrong, and will be none the less accountable for them.
