In Scripture, the word "cup" often symbolizes the pleasant or bitter experiences of life. "My cup runneth over" (Psalm 23:5), "The cup of God's wrath" (Isaiah 51:17), "The cup of blessing" (1 Corinthians 10:16). Our Lord used this term during the Passover meal: "For this cup is my blood of the new testament which is shed for many for the remission of sins" (Matthew 26:27). Also, in the garden He prayed: "If it be possible, let this cup pass from me" (Matthew 26:38).
This psalm is the fourth of six psalms sung with the Passover meal (113-118). The "cup of salvation" is depicted in the psalmist's prophetic hope of meeting his Messiah.
