The practice of physical circumcision was commanded by God in Genesis 17 as the sign of the Abrahamic covenant. But what did this practice symbolize and why was it so important? A careful study of both the Old and New Testaments reveals that circumcision was a symbol of 'heart circumcision': the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit, repentance unto life, and justification by faith in the Living Christ alone. This message traces out these various meanings and presses upon all men the necessity of spiritual circumcision if they are to be saved.
