When God makes a covenant with men He frequently gives covenant signs to cause them to remember what great things He has done for His people. In the Noahic covenant He gave the sign of the rainbow. To Abraham He gave the sign of circumcision. In the New Covenant, He has given us the signs of baptism and the Lord's Supper. Yet the visible church has historically often fallen into the trap of confusing the signs with the realities that they signify. Thus the unbelieving Jews in the first century A.D. advocated 'circumcisional regeneration', the Roman Catholics have made the Lord's Supper into an idolatrous feast, and some even in our own day teach the heresy of baptismal regeneration. This sermon is a call to use the covenant signs as God intends them to be used: to remember what great things He has done for us in the finished work of Christ.
