The Bible's Guide to football and church
One weird game
2. If church is like a game of football, what's the aim of the game? What are we all trying to do? To actually achieve?
- Let's look at the first 14 verses of Col 1. - Paul's aim for them? Where does he want the Colossians to get to, do you think?
3. So how does it happen?
Three means or mechanisms. We've already seen it in part:
1. Word. - it's the speaking or spreading or proclamation of the gospel, the word of truth, of Christ.
2. Spirit and prayer. - As the word of truth is explained and proclaimed, God works in the hearts of people to bring about a decisive change.
3. People. - it's people who do the speaking and proclaiming and teaching and admonishing.
4. Which people? - the people who do the speaking and the praying, are not just ministers, evangelists, pastors — but every Christian person.
What happens instead? - Through lack of training, knowledge, enthusiasm, commitment, — whatever the reason, we end up as spectators or support staff.
5. Now I know what some of you are thinking * You are thinking about the football game later today. Stop it!
- The Christian life is a team sport. And it has a goal. We want to get ourselves and as many people as we can over the line. |
