The prophecy of Haggai is set amidst the backdrop of momentous events. The Babylonian dynasty had been overthrown and replaced by the Medes and Persians. Cyrus, the new King, had issued his royal decree for the return of the Jews to the land and the rebuilding of God's house in Jerusalem. The returning exiles set about the work of rebuilding the Lord's house with eagerness and enthusiasm only to be confronted with opposition and slander. Discouragement followed and in its aftermath the work of God ceased. Haggai appeared upon the scene 14 years later to deliver God's message to the people. The content is essentially God's message to a discouraged people, it therefore contains a message relevant for every generation of believers.
