The twin problems of male abdication and domination (they usually go together) have been with us ever since the first man, Adam, stood by and watched his wife obey the serpent’s beguiling words. The Bible is not shy about recording #MeToo-type incidents. Yet it’s important to notice that the Apostle Paul does not regard female submissiveness as a part of the problem. He seems to rather regard it as a key part of a Godly home. Matched with a call to wives to submit, though, is three times as much exhortation to men to be the loving husbands that they ought to be. Male domination is not and cannot be solved by suppressing men and reducing their power. It has to be solved by changing their attitudes, and specifically by changing their attitude to match that of Jesus. Jesus didn’t take. Jesus gave Himself. And that is the attitude, husbands, that absolutely must be in you toward your wives. Indeed, as Paul has emphasized over and over, the giving attitude of Jesus Christ must pervade the entire Christian community in all its interactions. We have talked about that the for the last couple of months. But even more specifically, that giving attitude of Jesus Christ must pervade every interaction between a man and his wife. The climax of this section tells you, men, that your love for your wives tells the world how Jesus Christ loves His wife. And so if you mess that up, if you fail to love your wife rightly, you are misrepresenting Jesus. You are lying about God. You are a blasphemous wretch if you don’t love your wife. That is the message of our text this evening, and indeed for the next two evenings as well. Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church!
