"Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." Jesus' prayer may sound surprising - their sin was directly against God, and Jesus was more concerned with righteousness and God's honour than anyone else. It was public recognition that God is Judge of all, and forgiveness is more than personal. He did long for their forgiveness, but there is more here than Jesus' feelings. It was his mission to save sinners, and he was fulfilling the Father's command. That was in keeping with the well-known love of the Father, which he taught in the Parable of the Prodigal Son. The fact that Jesus was keeping his side of the agreement (by giving his life as a ransom) gave confidence that the Father would answer his prayer. All this should give us hope. God's mercy is obvious. Jesus has fulfilled all the conditions for us to be forgiven. In the words of one of his parables, "Come, for all things are now ready."
