The biblical doctrine of free and sovereign grace is one of the doctrines which answers some of the "why" questions of the Christian Faith. In the matter of the salvation of sinful and spiritually dead humans, the Scriptures reveal a glorious and mysterious truth: the Sovereign and Free Creator of the universe has, in His own and secret will, given a great gift to those who not only did not want it, but actively despised it and everything it represents. By "free", we should understand that God is under no outside compulsion to act favorably toward anyone. By "sovereign", we should understand that God has all authority and right to extend grace to whomever He will. This is the answer to the necessary "why" question. Apart from this act of free and sovereign grace, none would hear; none would come; none would even desire to be forgiven, but God chooses to glorify Himself by showing gracious mercy to some. But the doctrine does not end there. It emphatically means that none of our works, either before or after conversion, can recommend us to God. For that would make God a debtor to the work of His hands; you and me. And this would also mean that the impossible were possible - exceeding the requirements of all of the Law of God. – Pastor Schlegel
