Love Letters From a Pastor's Heart, Part 1
Most reliable Bible scholars believe that the Gospel of John, the Epistles of John, and the Revelation of John were written much later than the rest of the New Testament. In the main, I agree with this assessment. This is not a mere historical curiosity. The Epistle of John is much like the Apostle Paul's last letter to his son in the faith, Timothy (II Timothy). Paul was eager to give some final instructions and advice to his protégé because he knew that he was not going to be alive much longer. Thus, Paul concentrated upon those matters which were foremost in his mind and which he thought were the most useful to Pastor Timothy. Likewise, John's letters reveal his heart as he considers the end of his earthly ministry and the challenges he saw facing the church. Johns themes were: love in the midst of a world of hate, truth in a world of error, light in the midst of the darkness, the person and work of the Savior in a world which denies Him, and the believer's adherence to the doctrine which the apostles taught as opposed to the growing speculations of heretics and false prophets. All of these appear in the 13 verses of this short letter.
