In the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, Abraham told the rich man that his brothers should take heed to Moses and the prophets rather than expecting or requiring someone to return from death. Romans 10:17 assures us that faith comes by hearing the word of God. Here are four reasons that the word of God is superior even to the witness of one returning from the dead. One returning from the dead could not bring more necessary doctrine than the gospel contains, be more persuasive than God is in his word, cast a greater certainty on the gospel message, nor provide a greater power to convert than God has promised in the gospel.
We must therefore make practical use of the Scriptures by believing them for their authority and veracity, both of which are from God. Since God commands men to repent, it is unbelief of Scripture to refuse to do so, waiting for some greater revelation. The matters of Scripture are true, and we have a more sure warning from God than did Lot who entertained angels the night before God destroyed Sodom.
