Master in Koine Greek can mean, "one who watches over herds" or " the driver of an elephant." But it can also mean an"Egyptian task master." It can also be used speaking of the Greek games for "one of the leaders of an athletic society." It is also used for a "temple leader," Like the Chief Priest. So this could be confused by many different meanings if Luke had used the Koine Greek here. And I believe that Luke knew this, and used the Aramaic word. רַבִּי that word is translated Rabbi. Everyone here has heard the word Rabbi used before, but not in the way that the Disciples used it. You have heard of Rabbi as teacher, in conjunction with Jesus and the Pharasee's of the Sanhedran counsel. Luke uses the Aramaic Word here which is more powerful, Simon is literally calling Jesus "MY MASTER," or even "MY OWNER." This is why some believe that Simon was already saved at this point. I happen to believe that this narrative is the story of Simon and James and Johns Conversion and comensing into missionary training. The reason that I believe that this is the account of the conversion and Commensing into Missionary training, or discipleship training is Simon Peters confession of sin and depravity and Christ' subsequent mercy and grace and commissioning of Peter and James and John. We see Four landmarks that must be followed in order to truly disciple anyone. First is the Introduction. Second is the Invitation. Third is the Instruction. Fourth is the Commissioning.
