After speaking to the elders of the church at Ephesus, Paul is going to take his leave headed to where chains and tribulations await him. It obviously is an emotional time as he leaves these men that he has trained and worked alongside. But as he starts his benediction to them, he takes the time to emphasize how they know he is not a wolf. His whole ministry was about giving to them, about giving to those who were weak. His was not a ministry about taking from people. He wasn't living in comfort while others suffered around him. He was working with his hands to take care of others, so that they would see and understand that they were to follow his example. In an age, where many pastors get wealthy (or puffed up or gratified) off of the back of the church and take advantage of the weak, we need to understand Paul's warning. That is what a wolf looks like, while as a slave for Christ he looks very different. Slaves of Christ are willing to work and sacrifice to help the weak. The church has many wolves in it, because people cannot discern the difference. May God teach us from His Word so that we can.
