The apostle Paul visited the island of Cyprus on his first missionary journey. This was his first and last visit to the island, for he didn't go there on his 2nd or 3rd missionary journeys.
The deputy of the island was a man called Sergius Paulus. This would be his only opportunity to hear the gospel from the lips of Paul-he would never pass by that way again.
Rev John Gray takes an interesting look at a passage that is not often preached on, and brings a challenging gospel message.
He looks at Sergius Paulus and....
1. HIS DESIRE
'....desired to hear the Word of God.' (Acts 13:7)
This is a good thing. Sadly, many do not want to hear God's Word. Before you get saved, you will have this desire.
Having said that....you need more than this desire. You need to follow through, and come by saving faith to the Lord Jesus Christ.
2. HIS DISTRACTION
'But Elymas the sorcerer...withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith.' (Acts 13:8)
Here is a picture of the devil, seeking to distract men and women from obeying the Gospel-putting everything in their path to turn them away.
How long has he been distracting you ?
3. HIS DELIVERANCE
'Then the deputy, when he saw what was done, believed, being astonished at the doctrine of the Lord. ' (Acts 13:12)
That's the simple, yet essential message of the Gospel - 'believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.' (Acts 16:31)
