There are multiple places in the Bible that shows us the secret for having a successful prayer life, it goes all the way back to the book of Genesis, and it's encapsulated in the beautiful Old English word of 'importunity'. The Webster's 1828 dictionary defines 'importunity' as a 'Pressing solicitation; urgent request; application for a claim or favor, which is urged with troublesome frequency or pertinacity. Men are sometimes overcome by the importunity of their wives or children.' And that's what your prayer life should look like. This teaching on importunity is found in the story of Jacob wrestling with the Angel of the LORD in Genesis 32, God's command for the watchmen over Jerusalem in Isaiah 62, the Syrophenician woman in Mark 7, the unjust judge in Luke 18, and the friend in Luke 11 who comes knocking on the door at midnight, needing bread for an unexpected guest. The heartrending cry of blind Bartimaeus in Luke 18 for Jesus to have mercy on him and restore his sight is also an excellent illustration of importunity. Today I would like to bring you a much-needed message on the importance of importunity in prayer which could very well be a game-changer for you in your daily pray time with the Lord.
