“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” - Genesis 1:1-2
There I sat, seated at a table with a blank piece of canvas paper in front of me. Clean and white, just waiting to become something beautiful. The thing was, I had never really painted anything in my life. (Unless you count painting elbow macaroni and gluing it to a paper plate in Elementary school, in which case, I’m basically a pro.)
Nevertheless, I was determined to paint something. It was how I had decided to walk through the season of Lent - painting alongside my bible study for 40 days in a row. Why did I choose to paint? Maybe it was because I felt guilty about not using that watercolor set I had bought two years prior as part of my “New Year’s Resolution” to be more artsy. Whatever the reason, I was excited.
What came out after that first day was mediocre at best, but nevertheless I was proud. I had made something from the words God had spoken to me in my time with Him!
“And yet, O LORD, you are our Father. We are the clay and you are the potter. We are all the work of your hand.” - Isaiah 64:8
We serve a Creator God. He delights in His creation and is glorified through it and through us, His most treasured creation of all. In this knowledge, I found myself inspired to turn my creativity (however limited) back towards Him in praise.
“Therefore, as we take spontaneous delight in God’s creative activities, our creative activities, and the creative activities of others, we are giving glory to God by imitating the delight he takes in His creation.” - Wayne A. Grudem
How are you worshipping God through creativity? Have you ever thought about what ways you can worship Him in a new, creative way? It may look like macaroni on a plate, but when your heart is behind your art, He will be praised.
“And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.” - Genesis 1:31
