JUST ANY OLD BUSH WILL DO

Rev.A.J. Ogden

The call of Moses is very interesting in that he went such a long way in God’s service in his lifetime. As a babe we see him floating in a basket among the seaweeds and snakes, but later in life he is the great deliverer of the children of Israel. There is a lot in between we do not have space to write at the present time. But let us say, “Little is much when God is in it.”

In Exodus chapter three we read that Moses worked for his father-in-law at that time keeping his sheep in the desert land of Midian. One day as he strolled along shepherding those sheep, he saw and heard a strange thing. Over to his side was a burning bush. But what was stranger than that, the bush just kept on burning and never did burn up, as anyone would expect. Moses said he would turn aside and see this great sight and maybe he could figure why the bush never does burn to ashes.

But when he turned aside, God called him out of the midst of that old bush. Exodus 3:4, “And when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said Moses, Moses. And he said Here am I. Moses was saying, Yes Lord, I’m available for service Lord, use me, I surrender to your will. I remove my shoes, I worship you Lord and I am ready for service.

When Moses saw the strange burning bush, I do not believe he tried to examine the bush to see what kind it was. He didn’t care whether it was a desert tree, a sweet gum, elm, or an oak sapling. No, all that mattered was who it was that spoke from its midst. The kind of bush it was did not matter. What really mattered was that God was in it. Just any old bush would do if God was in it.

I sincerely believe this points to Colossians 1:27 in the New Testament where it says, “Christ in you, and the hope of glory.” No matter how gifted, talented or educated we are, we have no spiritual power unless God’s Holy Spirit fills us. Sometimes we look at man more than we ought to. He is nothing in God’s work unless he has God in him.

The poorest man on earth, the least talented, the worst looking fellow is great if the Great Holy Spirit is in him. Just any old bush will do if Christ is in it. Perhaps you feel ugly, small, have low self esteem and do not feel useful, but you can do a great work if God is in you and speaks from your lips. Just any old bush will do if Christ dwells within.
