Give me a good [clean] love story and I am there, my heart responding to that moment when the guy gets the girl and they walk off into the sunset to live happily ever after. [Cue Pride & Prejudice music here.] I want that. With a deep sigh I walk away with a longing that penetrates to my soul.
Our world teaches us that this is the reality. We find the right person and happily ever after is just a wedding ring away. And it really does feel like that… for awhile. But the real reality is that we are broken, sinful people living under the curse of sin. Even when two people come together in marriage who walk in the forgiveness and grace of Jesus, submitted to His authority, marriage is still not happily ever after. And so we long for the perfected reality.
Ecclesiastes 3:11 “He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man's heart,”
Our souls long for eternity.
They identify with what should be. That’s why we write stories and sing songs and paint pictures of what perfect love looks like. Our hearts have been planted with the desire to know a perfect love! But we recognize that what we have in the present is not the perfection that our souls long for … and then Jesus speaks to us.
Hosea 2:14, 19-20 “Therefore, behold, I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak tenderly to her. … And I will betroth you to me forever. I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in mercy. I will betroth you to me in faithfulness. And you shall know the Lord.”
In the midst of our disillusionment with the fact that nothing or no one can bring us the fairy tale reality we want, Jesus speaks to us!
He quite literally is the knight in shining armor. (Revelation 19:11-16) He has slain the dragon of sin and death for us and rescued us from the tower of brokenness. He speaks tenderly to us and heals our wounds. (Psalm 103)
