Thomas Jefferson in laying out the reasons for the American Revolution said, “Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are the gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath?” If what Mr. Jefferson is saying is true, and I firmly believe it is, the conclusion drawn from this is without God there will be no America as our founding fathers understood it. There seems to be a concentrated effort by many to destroy with political correctness and a false since of equality the very freedoms the Declaration of Independence said were “unalienable rights given by our Creator” (God). The right to love and worship God as we understand it from the Bible, the right to witness to our beliefs, the right to be free of persecution, the right to a nation that stands guard over our freedoms. There are those enemies of America who are trying to rewrite our history and force us into a society governed by the dictates of men and to kill the God of our fathers. I do not believe they have yet succeeded but the inroads they have made are indeed disturbing.
Who were these men that wrote our constitution? There were 55 delegates in 1787 involved in the Constitutional Convention. The make up of this convention says a lot about the founding of our nation. There were 28 Episcopalians, 8 Presbyterians, 7 Congregationalists, 2 Lutherans, 2 Dutch Reformed, 2 Methodist, 2 Roman Catholic, 3 Deists and 1 undetermined. The vast majority of these men, 93% of them, were members of Christian churches. There is little doubt that all were heavily influenced by Scripture in their views of man and of the government that should serve mankind.
These men understood tyranny and the destructive nature of it. They were bound and determined not to allow tyranny to be a part of America. They knew the only way to keep tyranny out was to have God in. They didn’t want a government that forced its citizens to worship nor tried to inhibit them from worshiping God. It was never their intention to remove God from all government. They made sure God was exalted in the founding documents. That he was clearly represented on government buildings. That he was praised and acknowledged in the historic prayers offered in the establishment of this nation. George Washington, our first President in 1789 declared “The liberty enjoyed by the people of these states of worshiping Almighty God agreeably to their conscience, is not only among the choicest of their blessings but also of their rights.” Our first president knew the value of what was created in this nation. Our first Supreme Court Chief Justice, John Jay also knew the value of men who served God. He said “Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers and it is the duty as well as the privilege and interest of our Christian Nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers.”
Our nation was founded by men who loved God and sought to worship him. They wanted to create a nation founded on the principles of Scripture. A nation that knew it owed its existence to the Almighty God. They knew God’s promise concerning such things, Psalm 37:28 “God the Lord loves the just and will not forsake his faithful ones. They will be protected forever, but the offspring of the wicked will be cut off.” If we do not, as a nation, turn away from our sins and seek the face of God and humbly acknowledge our need of him, then the blessing on this nation will disappear and this nation will cease to exist. Without God we cannot stand.
Jesus told us in John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” In John 14:6 he declared “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” God allowed this nation to be established in his name, based on the truth of his Word. What can you as an individual do to help preserve this nation? Hear the gospel message and turn to Jesus Christ, seeking his mercy, confessing your sin and asking Jesus to make you his. Only when the people of this land return to the worship of the Almighty God will this nation be healed and once again, be seen as great in this world. |
