The Bloody Baptism of Jesus

THE BLOODY BAPTISM OF JESUS

“But I have a baptism to be baptized with;
and how distressed I am till it be accomplished!”

Note that Christ Jesus our Lord earnestly desired this baptism. Why did He so long for it? First it was the consummation of His mission, the triumph of His purpose. Second, by it His Father would be glorified, Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. Father, glorify Your name. Then a voice came from heaven, saying, ‘I have both glorified it and will glorify it again’ (John 12:27-28).
But how, you ask, was the Father glorified in the death of His Son? In the death of His Son, all His perfections were manifest in the offering of Christ for our sins and He was thereby glorified in them.
His grace—we as sinners were condemned and justly deserving of God’s wrath. Like Barabbas, I could only be spared by the substitution of another, and it was grace that substituted Christ in my stead (Rom.3:24-27).
His love—when we look at the sacrifice of Christ we view unmerited love, as men hated Christ without a cause, so God loved us without a cause. But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. It was not only love unmerited; it was love unwanted. For when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son.
His holiness and justice—the Holy God hates sin! You say, is there anything that God can’t do? Yes, He cannot violate His Holy disposition. He cannot pardon sin without satisfaction. His nature demands perfection, therefore it is set down in the holy law, The soul that sinneth shall die. When our representative (Adam) violated the law the human race suffered the consequences; all were cast under the curse. Before one sinner can be justified sin must be paid for; therefore the primary purpose of Christ death as a sacrifice on the cross was to satisfy God’s holiness, which is manifest in the just demands of the law.
His wisdom—the foolishness of God is wiser than men. The wisdom of God in redemption by blood is so baffling to man that he cannot comprehend the simplicity of the cross apart from spiritual illumination, therefore he rejects it as utterly foolish (I Cor.1:22-24).
The power of God—the great mystery is that through death He conquered death. So powerful was the satisfaction of Christ death that the grave could not hold Him.
