Amazing love! How can it be?

FROM THE PASTOR
“...He loved them to the end.”
“Amazing love! How can it be?...”
As the Apostle John begins chapter 13 of this account of the Gospel record, he seems to be consciously looking over the final two days of Jesus’ life and then summarizes it. He records many of the details not found in the other accounts. John, who is called “the disciple of love”, focuses more on Jesus’ comforting conversations with His disciples (ch.13-16), and the gracious words of His “High Priestly Prayer” for “His own” (ch.17). John gives an insider’s view of Jesus’ endurance of enmity from “church leaders” while interrogated by the High Priest and of His being mocked in the court of Pilate (ch.18). And as we read this we are moved to ask: why would the Son of God – with all His proven power and authority – allow Himself to be bound, mocked, misjudged, chosen as substitute for Barabbas and finally led off to the cross to be most cruelly crucified on the symbol of the curse?
Why? It was because of His love for sinners. He suffered all this because, as a substitute for sinners, the court of heaven laid upon Him the iniquity of His people (Isa.53:6). Jesus suffered all this because “the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many" (Mark 10:45). God sent His Son to show His love in the salvation of sinners and Jesus submitted to all that was “written in the scroll of the book of him” (Ps.40:7; Heb.10:5-7). He was obedient to His Father’s whole redemption plan – “even to the death of the cross” (Phil.2:8). Now, as John looks over this whole history of the Saviour’s life past and what is to come toward the cross and resurrection, he believes that the best way to summarize it is: “.... He loved them unto the end.” How shall we respond to such a gospel of love? Such love demands our sincere repentance, unflinching trust, hearty worship and cheerful service.
As you embrace this love of God by the saving work of the Holy Spirit you will know and experience that God’s love for us calls us to love Him and our neighbour with all we have “...even unto the end.” That word “end” (telos) does not describe simply the last moment of a span of time. The Greek word describes an end in the sense of purpose, goal, or maturity point of the process. It here describes the fulfillment of life’s final goal, as the Puritans asked in the Westminster Shorter Catechism: “What is your chief end?” Jesus achieved His “chief end” on earth. Are you living a life of love to arrive at your end goal?
