Holiness, Holiness Is What I Long For. Really? Matthew 6: 9

Beloved,

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.” (Matthew 6:9)

As Jesus taught His disciples to pray, He began in the place where we all should start; God’s sovereignty and holiness. Before Jesus ever made His first request, He honored God not just by saying He was sovereign and holy but espousing this truth as the center of His daily life. Jesus’ point is that without God’s sovereignty and holiness, nothing else that comes afterward matters.
There are all kinds of people who run past this first part of Jesus’ prayer to make their requests known. These requests may be good, they may be loving and they may be intended for someone else but if they are made devoid of a personal commitment to God as sovereign and holy in their life, they ask wrongly. Jesus didn’t skip over God’s rightful place in His life to list off all the needs He had and I am sure He had many. He started by truly honoring God as the supreme authority in His life who is unquestionably able to require holiness from each person. Why should we think that we can do anything different?

Word for the weak

Hallowed (37) ἁγιάζω [hagiazo /hag•ee•ad•zo] make holy, consecrate, sanctify; (1) of things set apart for sacred purposes consecrate, dedicate (MT 23.19); (2) of God’s name treat as holy, revere (MT 6.9); (3) of persons; (a) objectively, of Christ and his church acknowledged as being God’s own possession set apart for a holy purpose, dedicate, consecrate (1C 6.11); (b) subjectively, of spiritual and moral preparation sanctify, make holy, purify (1TH 5.23); (4) specifically in 1C 7.14 of an unbelieving partner in a Christian home set aside for God’s purpose sanctified, consecrated, accepted or acknowledged by God. Used this week in Matthew 6: 9. Look it up.
