With some of you the bosom sin will be pride, with others lust, with others gossip, with others covetousness, and so on. But regardless of what the sin is, I guarantee that with each of you there will be one of the Ten Commandments you break most often. In excusing this sin, you will tell yourself, “I have parted with MANY OTHER sins and that should be enough to satisfy God; this one last sin I will not give up!” Ah, but Christian what you don’t understand is that the sin you most want to keep is the sin you most need to part with. Do you remember the story of the rich young ruler in Mark 10? What was the idol that Jesus asked him to part with? It was his riches, and they were the one thing he most wanted to hold on to. So too, what Christ is asking you to part with is that bosom sin you must want to hold on to. Please know that you are lying to yourself if you believe that because you’ve gotten rid of so many other sins that it must be safe to hold onto this last one. Muhammad reduced the number of idols in the Kaba at Mecca from 360 to only 1, the former moon-god Allah, but fanatical devotion to that one idol has done more harm than all of the other idols combined.
