One of the reasons I enjoy praying outside is because observing God’s creation moves my mind and my affections toward God. Recently I was walking a trail and spending time in prayer when I could not help but notice a beautiful sky. There were only a few clouds in the sky and the morning hue was a deep, smooth blue. The clouds which were present were as slim stretches of waves capping across the blue ocean. The sun, coming up and casting its light on the underneath of the thin, stretching clouds, colored them a light pink. It was absolutely gorgeous! I began to ponder on this captivating scenery, and thus slipped right into a meaningful time of prayer with the Lord.
I first thought, “If the Lord so easily, masterfully, and wonderfully paints a breathtaking sky in this world, imagine how spell-bounding the views in the new heavens and the new earth will be!” Just think about it for a few minutes. This present world is tainted, tarnished, and corrupted under a weight of sin. In fact, creation itself groans to be set free from the mucky fog of falleness that hampers its fullness (Rom 8:22). One day, that heavy mist will vanish and the new heavens and new earth will shine forth in all their glorious, God-given wonder! If you think you have seen beauty in creation, you haven’t seen anything yet! The new heavens and new earth will so far outshine this present world that there will hardly be any comparison (Rev 21:1).
A further thought struck me with even more force. I thought, “If the beauty of this fallen creation grabs our attention, imagine what it will be like when we behold the Creator in all His beauty!” It is true, isn’t it, that the heavens declare the glory of God? The beauty, the perfection, the order, the design, the detail, the intricacy of creation points back to the Creator. If His handiwork is breathtaking, He will leave us absolutely breathless! (Rev 22:4, Ps 19:1) The beauty we speak of now is only a glimpse, a shadow, a taste of the true beauty which is the presence of God!

His perfect, radiant beauty is enough to capture our wonder, awe, and praise forever!
