At one time, people in America were born into a world that was intellectually Christian. Most people had a Christian view of God, justice, reward and punishment, and Heaven and Hell. That is simply not the case any longer. We live in a culture that is quite simply pluralistic. We could not count the differing worldviews we might be confronted with in just a week's time if we were to simply engage people in one large city or another. This dynamic creates special problems for gospel witness. As one commentator noted, there are no more magic bullets when it comes to gospel presentation. So, how do we reach such a culture?
These issues and more are highlighted in a new book edited by John Piper and Justin Taylor: The Supremacy of Christ in a Postmodern World . Tim Keller's chapter entitled, "The Gospel and the Supremacy of Christ in a Postmodern World" is particularly helpful. Some of Keller's thoughts as connected to the Scriptures will serve as a foundation for our discussion today on "Calling for Truth."
