"For in the hand of the Lord is a cup, and the wine is red; it is well mixed, overflowing from his hand: he will make all the sinners of the earth take of it, even to the last drop.”

God's threatenings are very severe. This makes the gospel the most important and thrilling message in the world. It saves from a real hell - God's eternal judgment against sin. It brings peace and power to obey him. Without the gospel, God's wrath will come upon us. Like the rich man in hell, we'll thirst, being in torments because of the flame. This is what Christ cried out on Calvary, “I thirst,” when he was dying for sin! We must have a Substitute and a Sacrifice: God's wrath is coming.

Men make God to be all love. They've dethroned him and disrobed him of his immaculate holiness. They've made him man's biggest cheerleader, instead of a mighty Lord who's ready to punish everyone who rejects his mercy.

Injustice will not stand. Iniquity will not go unpunished. If to forgive sin, God spared not his Son, but punished him for the sins of others, then what's he going to do with everyone who refuses to follow Christ in faith, love, and obedience? He's going to empty the cup of his wrath, until it covers people like the Flood. Sinners will suffer in the lake of fire.

They say Jesus preached on hell more than heaven… That he preached on hell more than any of the Prophets or Apostles! That sounds right. Fear God, and give him glory. It will be well with you. He warns for our benefit, so we can taste his mercy. He withdraws us from destruction. It's wisdom to follow Christ, and it's self preservation. Play the long game. Invest wisely.

Grace is the sweetest thing ever tasted, because the alternative is bitter! Instead of fear, we have peace. Instead of shame, dread, and hiding, we have boldness with access and sweet communion. Instead of slavery to illicit lusts, he gives us power to overcome, and the joy of doing good. Instead of hell, we get heaven and the riches of God's friendship! Instead of pain, we get pleasure forever.
