CALL TO WORSHIP

Lamb of God, Thou now art seated

High upon Thy Father’s throne,

All Thy gracious work completed,

All Thy mighty vic’try won.

Ev’ry knee in heav’n is bending

To the Lamb for sinners slain;

Ev’ry voice and harp is swelling,

“Worthy is the Lamb to reign.”

Thou for us art interceding,

Everlasting is Thy love,

And a blessed rest preparing

In our Father’s house above.

Soon Thy saints shall rise to meet Thee,

With Thee in Thy kingdom reign;

Thine the praise and Thine the glory,

Lamb of God for sinners slain.

WHY HAST THOU FORSAKEN ME?

“And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” (Matt. 27:46)

I don’t understand how God is one God, yet God could forsake Himself. I don’t understand how that was done, but I do know why it was done. The Father forsook the Son because the Son deserved to be forsaken. The Father slaughtered His Son because the Son deserved to be slaughtered. The Son had become guilty of the sin of His people so He deserved to suffer and die. God’s justice demanded it.

The Savior’s suffering brought all of God’s blessings to His people. Since the Father forsook the Son when His Son was made sin, the Father will never leave nor forsake any of His people. (Heb. 13:5) There is no reason for the Father to forsake any of His people because the sacrifice of Christ took away all of the sin of all of His elect. The same justice of God that demanded that Christ die when He was made sin, now demands the life of everyone for whom Christ died.

If fills my heart with sorrow to think of what the Savior suffered for me, but I sure am thankful that He let us know how and why He suffered so that His people can rest in Him.

SALVATION VERSUS TULIP

TULIP is a good acronym for the gospel of God’s grace that we preach and believe. However, there is a great difference between knowing TULIP and having salvation.

Knowing TULIP is knowing that all of Adam’s race is totally depraved in sin. It is knowing that the Father unconditionally elected a people to save before time began. It is knowing that Christ died only for the elect. It is knowing that the Holy Spirit will irresistibly draw the elect to Christ by the preaching of the gospel. It is knowing that the Lord will preserve all of His elect to the end. All of that is true doctrine. Those are the facts stated in the scriptures.

Salvation is more than knowing facts. Salvation is knowing that I am totally depraved in sin so the only way I can be saved is if God does all of the saving. Salvation is knowing that since I am dead in sin, I will never choose God. If I would be saved God must choose to save me. Salvation is knowing that my sin is so great that the only way I can be redeemed is by the blood of God. The only way I can be saved is if the Son of God died for my sin on purpose so that I would be saved. Salvation is knowing that I need the Holy Spirit to reveal Christ to me. I am so spiritually dead and blind that the only way I will ever see Christ is if He is revealed to me. Salvation is knowing that I would quit believing and fall away from Christ in a heartbeat so I need God to keep me by His grace. Salvation comes when TULIP quits being mere doctrine and becomes my need.

Pastor

“According To His Purpose” - Romans 8:28

Everything that comes to pass in time is brought to pass “according to his purpose,” according to the sovereign, eternal, unalterable purpose of God “who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will” (Ephesians 1:11). The Word of God assures us that behind and beneath all the apparent confusion of this world lies the purpose of God. It is God’s purpose to perfect the people he has chosen and restore the world he made to himself through the mediatoral work of the Lord Jesus Christ. To this end, he arranged all the affairs of human history from eternity and sovereignly brings them to pass in time. History is ”His Story!” Nothing happens in his story by accident. Nothing comes to pass that he has not purposed. Nothing can thwart, or even hinder his purpose.
