Romans 13:11–12 (NKJV): And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. 12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.
There is a consequence inherent to the sleepy half-life of the modern church. We miss much that is happening around us, we have become immune to depravity, we have been anesthetized to the sin of the culture, and worse, to the rebellion of the church itself. Far too many who name the name of Christ have become addicted to the syrupy sweet kool-aid of the world. We love the ease, we love the comfort, we love the lazy manner in which we live out our ineffective existences. And all the while, the click ticks on, steadily advancing toward the day when God will demand an accounting. Every breath that we are permitted to have in our bodies is a breath for which we will give an account before the judgment seat of Christ. But far more importantly is the truth that the day of the vengeance of our God approaches for the ones we claim to love but actually couldn't care less about. As harsh as this sounds, our actions show the truth of the assessment. For we will not warn them of the danger, will not seek to deliver them from the coming storm, and our excuse is just our own fear. We are more afraid of their anger than the wrath of God on their account... it is shameful, and it is sad, but it is also NOT too late! Paul urges us to awake, to recognize that the time is short and to stand our ground for the sake of truth, for the name of Christ, for the glory of heaven. We still have time to change our direction and to press hard after the face of God. The fact that the night is far spent and the day is at hand should not be a paralyzing thought, as it so often is, rather it should invigorate our lives with passion for the lost and a larger desire for the glory of God. It should motivate us to declare ourselves as men and women of God, to establish that the priority of our whole life is the pleasure of God and to forsake forever all claim that the world's ways and motives have had in us. Let us demonstrate to a watching world that we are no longer the allies that it thought we were. Let us declare war on sin and destruction, let us treasure Christ and rescue the perishing with all the strength that our God might be pleased to grant.
