CALL TO WORSHIP
Thou, whose Almighty Word
Chaos and darkness heard
And took their flight
Hear us, we humbly pray
And in this Gospel day
Shine forth Thy glorious Ray
Let there be Light.
Thou, bless’d Incarnate Word
Gird on Thy mighty sword
Conquer Thy foes
Fullness of grace Divine
Subdue this heart of mine
And may Thy glory shine
Let there be Light.
Spirit of Truth and Love
Life-giving, Holy Dove
Speed forth Thy flight
Shine on Thy chosen race
By Thy Almighty grace
Dispel the dark of night
Let there be light.
(Tune: “Come, Thou Almighty King” p. 6)

BE STRONG IN GRACE
In II Timothy 2:1, Paul instructs us to “be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.” That is good instruction that each of us should take to heart. Be strong in grace by standing for God’s gospel of grace. Be strong in grace by preaching salvation only by God’s grace. Be strong in grace by refusing to compromise the message of salvation by grace alone. Be strong in grace by supporting the message of saved by grace. And very importantly, be strong in grace by strongly resisting the desire of the flesh to trust in something the flesh can do to make us more saved, more righteous, or more accepted by God. Be strong in grace by refusing to trust your soul to anything except God’s grace in Christ Jesus alone.

BLACK ON BLACK
I am sure you have heard the story of the jeweler laying out his diamonds on a black cloth as an illustration of gospel preaching. The contrast of the black cloth against the beauty of the diamond makes the brilliance of the diamond easier to see. When we preach the gospel, we must tell of the blackness of man’s sin and depravity. If the Lord ever makes us to see the blackness of our sin, the beauty and glory of Christ will be easy to see.
This week I changed all of the interior door knobs in my daughter’s house to the black door knobs that she wanted. While I was working on one of the knobs, I laid the black screws down on a black piece of felt that she had on a nearby dresser. I had the hardest time finding those screws later on when I needed them. It occurred to me then that the reason we don’t see the blackness of our sin and depravity is because we are comparing ourselves to each other. When we compare one black sin to another black sin we don’t seem so sinful. We only see the depravity of our sin when we compare ourselves to Christ! When we compare ourselves to Christ it is easy to see that we need Him to save us from our sin.

“Salvation Will God Appoint For Walls And Bulwarks”
Isaiah 26:1
What walls and bulwarks are to a fortress, an enclosure of safety, salvation is to the church and people of God. God’s saints, those who are born into his church and kingdom, are kept eternally secure in his salvation. The believer’s safety and security is not his will, his works, his worth, or even his faith, but God’s salvation. We believe in the infallible security, perseverance, and preservation of every believer because we know that salvation is God’s work alone. And we “know that whatsoever God doeth, it shall be forever: nothing can be put to it, nor anything taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him” (Ecclesiastes 3:14). This is our security! Until God’s purpose, Christ’s blood, and the Spirit’s work can be nullified, God’s elect are safe and secure. These are the walls and bulwarks of salvation!
