We often times talk about Christ's death in simplistic terms. While true that He died to save us from our sins, we must dive a little bit deeper. Did He die twice? When and at what point was redemption for your sins made? We can talk about His spiritual death and His physical death! The atoning death was not His physical death as some often times think or believe. It was His finishing of His Father's work! He paid for our sins and then He died Himself.
What: To understand the true nature of His death we have to go to the beginning and not just talk of His physical death as most want to. Through sin death came into this world. Adam was with God in LIFE! He placed two trees in the garden and said the day you eat of the one you shall surely die. No, he did not kneel over and drop dead but corruption took hold of everything and Adam's death or fall was really separation from God. And it was only by the grace of God that He continued talking with Adam though Adam had broken fellowship with God. Death is separation from God. It is its very essence. God forsook His only Son! Wouldn't we expect Him to say "my Father" instead of "my God, my God?" He was cast out! He lost all intimacy with Him! He lost all fellowship with the Father! That is the definition of hell!
For Whom: We see the Son of God in His human nature feel the total impact of separation from God. He says nothing while being cast out except "I thirst" having been drained of the hell and He sips that He may cry out "It is finished!" He did not die for Himself, but for you and I! As all fell in Adam so the 2nd Adam (Christ) we were made alive unto a quickening Spirit! What happened in paradise the first where death came so Christ restored that which was lost and bruised His heel.
Result: He was cast out and forsaken of God that we might never ever be forsaken. Why did He do that? It is unexplainable but nevertheless agreed in His Triune nature to save a people unto Himself through sin and grace to His own glory forevermore. (Read the Apostle's creed.)
God, in His sovereign plan saved you and I as Christ took upon Himself the hell that was due to you and I.
Thanks be to God for such a great salvation. We are thankful now and will be into all of eternity....a world without end AMEN!
