God's Pattern for Raising Children - Proverbs 4:2

Solomon is pointing to the high calling God gives to fathers. One of the greatest privileges fathers have under God's economy is to train their children. If we were to pose the following question to men: what was your greatest accomplishment? How would many answer? Since we are a people who have been trained by secularist and humanist, then few would respond - training my children in the fear and admonition of the Lord. As a result, we are not known as a wise people. Unfortunately, many fathers refuse to heed God's high calling. Other fathers may spend time teaching their children how to hunt or throw a ball, but neglect their spiritual development.

But Solomon reminds fathers to be attentive to the spiritual needs of their children. Notice a good father teaches their children doctrine. Not just any doctrine but good doctrine. Good doctrine comes only from God's Word. Therefore, this implies that fathers know and apply God's Word. A Biblical illiterate cannot teach good doctrine. And it is not enough for a father to teach, but they must live out the doctrine they teach.
