I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me,

though he die, yet shall he live. John 11.25

When Jesus declared Himself to be the resurrection and the life, what did He mean? Did He mean He can make you feel really good about yourself and your future and therefore really enjoy life? Is Christ simply offering a nice, warm and fuzzy spiritual experience? Or is it much, much more?

The answer to that question actually lies in His next words (context is always important for biblical interpretation). “Whoever believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live.” Jesus is offering more than a spiritual feeling. He is offering life after death!! He is actually answering one of life’s most important questions, namely, is there anything after death? The Bible is adamant, and Jesus is clear – YES!

The promise of life after death (though he die, yet shall he live) hinges on faith in Christ (Whoever believes in Me). A cursory study of saving faith in the Bible reveals that believing in Jesus means more than simply agreeing with the Bible’s description of Jesus – that is nothing more than demonic faith (James 2:19). Believing in Jesus means surrendering to Him, loving Him, following Him. Trusting Him as your Savior and serving Him as your Lord. When we “believe” in Christ like that, we are saved forever, we are given eternal life.
